Product Review: YSL Glossy Stain vs L’Oreal Shine Caresse Gloss

I have only used 1 YSL Glossy Stain, but I have to admit I have found a pretty similar product at the drugstore. They are the L’Oreal Shine Caresse Glosses. I have Infinite Fuchsia, Coral Tattoo, Berry Persistant and Endless Red. I wanted to get the berry/red colors as opposed to the lighter colors because I wanted to see the staining power of them. The YSL Glossy Stain is $32, while I found the L’Oreal Shine Caresse Gloss for $10 (although I got them buy 1 get 1 half off). Of course the packaging on the YSL glosses are much more high-end (although I still much prefer their regular lipstick tubes), and even the brushes are similar to each other:

As you can see the brushes are similar but not identical. Since YSL is owned by L’Oreal, it makes sense that they are extremely similar. They both feel lightweight and almost gel-like when you first apply them, however I can tell the YSL one doesn’t feel as heavy or thick as the L’Oreal one. I usually wear two to three coats with them, so they are opaque to the max, along with extremely glossy. I do notice that the L’Oreal glosses feel stickier than the YSL ones, but that is to be expected due to their price. Like I said, I don’t have identical colors since I’ve only tried one YSL one, but as for staying power and formula, I’d say these are pretty similar for 1/3 of the price. Here are the colors I purchased:

And here are the swatches; L-R – YSL #5, L’Oreal Infinite Fuchsia, Coral Tattoo, Berry Persistant, Endless Red

Here they are on my lips (be forewarned, the lighting isn’t exact and I clearly was not extremely precise in applying these glosses, so don’t judge me.

YSL #5, a gorgeous, medium mauve berry

L’Oreal Infinite Fuchsia, a hot yet dark pink

L’Oreal Coral Tattoo, a pinky orange

L’Oreal Berry Persistant, a gorgeous deep redish purple

L’Oreal Endless Red, a red with a slight orange hue (not a neutral true red)

So, would I recommend these? Yes, however I also recommend everyone gets a L’Oreal gloss and a YSL gloss to compare for themself. Regardless, you will be happy with both. They both have over 10 color shades, but I of course wanted something a little brighter and stronger for my lips. If you’ve tried these, let me know in the comments! See you Sunday with a new outfit post, I hope you all have a lovely weekend. xo

I saw them in my local grocery store and FREAKED OUT! I thought they weren’t supposed to be out until January, so I was extremely excited! When you try them, let me know what you think.

Awesome comparison! :) I’ve been dying to try the Glossy Stains, but I think I’ll hold off and try some of the L’Oreal ones instead. Berry Persistent looks beautiful!

Thank you so much! For the price, I would definitely pick up the Loreal ones to try. Put on 2-3 coats, but wait a minute in between coats to let them dry :)

You know why the quality of those L’oreal glossy’s are spot on to YSL? It’s because L’oreal owns YSL too! Overall, L’oreal does good lip as they probably have access to a great formulation that they can play around with. :)

    I loved this comparison!
