Manicure Monday: How-To Glitter Shellac! Holiday Red

This weeks Manicure Monday is a little different. I have glitter shellac on this week (see my last Glitter Shellac mani here) and this time I’m going to show you how to get it done at your local salon (or do it yourself if you are a pro!) These nails are so holiday it’s killer, they are beyond amazing :) Enjoy!

First, you clean up your nails like you usually would with clipping, shaping, and filing your nails and cuticles. Then, ensure your nail is clean of all oils and dirt. I usually use a tiny bit of nail polish remover. Then, do one Shellac base coat, and cure for 10 seconds. Then, start to paint one coat of your Shellac color, I used “Wildfire”:

Then cure for 2 minutes:

Then, take whatever glitter you would like to use–finely milled craft glitter is the best we’ve found. I mixed red glitter and silver this time:

Then press the glitter into the nail, clean up the edges and scuff off any excess glitter>

Here is what it should look like at this point–you can see it is still a little rough.

Once your nails are cleaned up, you want to put on one Shellac top coat, cure for 2 minutes. Then do a second top coat, and cure for 2 minutes.

After that is done, you take alcohol and clean off the nail. You can actually scrub the nail and it is perfectly dry! Amazing :)

Finished product: It is 100% dry, and so smooth you cannot feel there is chunky glitter underneath. Absolutely amazing.

I hope you enjoyed this different type of Manicure Monday post, and that you have learned a little bit about Shellac! Thank you to my co-worker Tiffany for taking these photos, and to Beverly for doing my nails! :) Let me know if you have tried Shellac before, or if you would be interested in trying it (either regular, or with glitter for the holidays!) xoxo always

Hi! I’ve been getting shellac manicures since October 2011. I absolutely love them!! I can’t go back to regular manicures anymore :). I will ask my manicurist to try mixing the red and silver glitters together next month on my nails! I would love to share with you the different glitters and designs we’ve done so far if you’re interested.

    Sincerely,

    Betty

I love the glitter shellac! It’s so gorgeous and lasts forever! I don’t do it as often because I get bored and live changing my nail color :)

Hi, I love shellac glitter but dont no what glitter to use. Does it have to be shellac glitter or any glitter? and if so where from or what type… thanks x

  3. Jodi says:

How do you apply the glitter? Do you have to get the brush wet with anything or will it just stick to the brush then go on to the nail?

  4. Carole says:

How Difficult is the glitter to remove though?
Surely it must take longer than normal .
    Thanks

    • Alyson says:

Hi Carole, it doesn’t take any longer than normal shellac, but it’s absolutely more difficult to remove than regular nail polish. Hope that is helpful!
